Coach or Therapist?

Choosing the Right Support for Your Mental Health

At Private Path Wellness, I understand that seeking help is a personal decision. Some people need the specialized care of a therapist, while others benefit from the practical, goal-oriented support of a Certified CBT Coach Practitioner like myself.

Coaching and therapy are not the same — but they can work hand-in-hand. Therapy is designed for diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions, while CBT-informed coaching focuses on building coping skills, managing stress and anxiety, and helping you move forward with confidence in your daily life.

The guide below will help you decide whether coaching, therapy, or a combination of both is the best fit for your needs.

Choose a Coach (Certified CBT Coach Practitioner) when you want to:

  • Learn Cognitive Behavioral Coaching (CBC) or Dialectical Behavioral Coaching (DBC) techniques to manage stress, anxiety, or negative thought patterns.

  • Gain practical coping skills rooted in evidence-informed methods (like CBT) to handle day-to-day challenges.

  • Build resilience and emotional regulation for work, relationships, and life transitions.

  • Have immediate access to support while waiting for a therapist.

  • Focus on goal setting and accountability to maintain healthy routines.

  • Work on grief, stress, or life adjustments with structured, supportive guidance.

  • Access flexible scheduling (evenings, weekends, phone/video).

As a Certified CBT Coach Practitioner, I use structured, mental-health–informed coaching to help you move forward, strengthen coping strategies, and feel supported.

Choose a Licensed Therapist when you need to:

  • Receive a mental health diagnosis (such as depression, PTSD, or bipolar disorder).

  • Process deep trauma or unresolved emotional wounds.

  • Engage in clinical treatment that may involve medication or specialized interventions.

  • Access care that is often covered by insurance.

  • Work on conditions that require medical oversight or advanced clinical expertise.

A therapist provides professional diagnosis and treatment for mental health disorders.
